Calling all miners!

Were you or your family involved in the coal mining industry in Warwickshire? Join us at Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery’s Mining Reminiscence Café for a free event on Saturday 18th May, 11am until 4pm
Our Access Assistants will have a wide range of mining related artefacts from our collections for you to handle. We would love to capture some stories and memories associated with the objects from our visitors.
We are particularly interested to hear from members of the Warwickshire Miners’ Association. The W.M.A was an organisation representing local miners’ interests and at its height had 11,000 members. It later became the National Union of Mineworkers, Warwickshire District. In the Museum collections, we have a wonderful banner that was made to parade through the streets.
Councillor John Glass, who was the last secretary of the Association says:
“I fully support the Museum’s intention to collect stories about the W.M.A and miners’ experiences of working in the Warwickshire Pits. These stories will be used to create a new Community Showcase display at the Museum over the summer. My involvement started when I approached the Museum about a banner that was donated to them by the W.M.A. I wanted to take it to a big meeting of miners in Durham. Though this isn’t possible, we are looking into making a replica to parade instead.”
The event is free and there is no need to book. Please drop in anytime from 11am to 4pm.
Don’t forget there are also temporary exhibitions and permanent displays to enjoy for free around the building.
